Background:
Hanneke is the third of five children born to Emeris and Jaskin, fieldhands at Nabol Hold. She had a normal, happy upbringing: she was close to her siblings, her parents, and her wide extended family, all of whom lived in close proximity. A generous, good-hearted child, Hanneke preferred to laugh than cry; she was well-liked among her peers, and considered a 'good girl' by her elders.

She was twelve when Journeyman Harper Kasden was posted to the Hold, and took over the delivery of Harper classes to the Hold's children. he was good looking and young - only a few turns out of Apprenticeship - and it was his first posting, so it was no surprise that he quickly became popular with both his students and their families. Though Hanneke had never been an especially good student, she caught Kasden's eye; she was too young, certainly, but she was vivacious and friendly and attractive, in a fairly generic way, and he was interested.

He waited until she was fourteen, and no longer his student, before doing anything about it, and conveniently, Hanneke had always had something of a crush on the much-older Harper - so they began walking out together, despite the age difference. She took up work in the fields alongside her parents, and spent her evenings with him, an arrangement that worked quite well until not long before she turned sixteen, when she discovered she was pregnant. Whether Kasden had intended her as a wife, or just an amusement while he was posted to the Hold, he married her within a handspan of sevendays, professing his love for both her and, some months later, their son, Elthan.

Hanneke doted upon her husband and newborn son, and after Elthan's birth gave up her job in the fields to take in laundry and mending, allowing her to stay at home with him. Kasden spent his days teaching, and many of his evenings writing, but he was always home in time to go to sleep with his wife and son. They were, as far as anyone was concerned, very happy.

When Hanneke was eighteen, however, Kasden came home one night to announce that he had received word from Harper Hall that his posting was to change. Hanneke had never considered that this posting might not be permanent; she was not especially thrilled with the notion of leaving behind her parents and siblings, and the only home she'd ever known. But there was no way around it, Kasden explained: he was a Harper, he did what he was told, and truly, the only way for him to advance in his career was to broaden his skills. And she would love the weyr, he was sure of it - for it was Telgar Weyr that they were bound.

Hanneke resigned herself, though with no little trepidation, and in the late summer of turn 16, their little family journeyed to Telgar.

Description:
Pretty, in a generic, girl-next-door kind of way, Hanneke is a slender young woman of average height, with an infectious, dimpled smile and clear green eyes. Her tousled, wavy blonde hair is chopped to shoulder length, and frames her rounded, pink-cheeked face, covering her ears, which stick out from her head. Though probably a late teen, there is maturity to her face, and the lines of her body.
Hanneke wears a cream-coloured blouse with darker piping about neck and cuff, tucked in to an ankle-length skirt dyed dark blue. Her shawl, wrapped about shoulders and then tied behind her waist, is several shades lighter, and matches the length of ribbon with which she holds her hair out of her face.
